Historically, organizations have considered security threats to exist only on the outside of their networks. As a result, most solutions focus on keeping "bad guys" out using technologies such as firewalls. Raj Sharma, a well-known visionary, had a different perspective on this issue: he saw that the data security problem goes well beyond the perceived notions of insider vs. outsider. All malicious activity that can result in compromise of core enterprise assets such as intellectual property, know-how, trade secrets, and customer data, must be stopped regardless of the perpetrator's location. Packet GENERAL was formed in 2002 in order to provide real data security — protection of proprietary and sensitive corporate information assets from unauthorized/illegal access or use, disclosure, modification, and/or destruction.

Security GENERAL is a secure soft appliance that is built from ground-up to do only one thing — provide data security. A single mission-critical application is installed on the appliance and is guaranteed to run in a pristine and controlled environment. The data are encrypted at the source after establishing the integrity of the operating environment. A multilayered defense mechanism is employed that not only protects the data but also provides information assurance — something rarely talked about these days.

Current approaches that employ brute-force encryption of SAN/NAS storage clusters help to secure file data, but are unable to adequately protect mission-critical application data, due to lack of real control over the source of the data — the server that hosts the application. The agent technology used to establish control over these mission-critical servers is susceptible to various attacks and can create a false sense of security.

Packet GENERAL's service model further augments the security of the data on a non-stop basis. The integrity of the platform and of the data is maintained. Period.
